WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST

Women Artists of the West (WAOW) 2022 Gallery Exhibition features stunning selection of artworks in a variety of genres and mediums. This is our inaugural issue of our 52nd WAOW National Exhibition in this format, with an easy to print and order catalog from the WAOW website, waow.org. We are so proud of this catalog! This beautiful catalog showcases each individual artist and their thoughts behind their work and one of the reasons this piece was juried into the National Exhibition at McBride Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland. It also gives you insight into the personal life of the artist along with the picture of the artist. You will be proud to own this catalog and display this catalog on your coffee table. As our 52nd year draws to a close, it is easy to reflect where we started, see article about WAOW beginnings, and where we are now. As women artists, the WAOW organization promotes women across the nation, Canada and Australia. History tells us that women artists make up 50% of the working artists today. As in the past, women have struggled between being wives, mothers, professional career women and their art. Yet, we are only represented by 3-5% of the museums nationwide in permanent collections. We are striving to change this statistic, through awareness. Quality shows like East Meets West is how we bring attention to the beautiful work by women. We also participate in WAOW group ad campaigns in national magazines, and through social media and education. We strive, as the oldest professional, fully-juried women’s arts organization, to educate, promote and mentor other women to tell their story and put their work in the public eye, through galleries, museums and plein air events. East Meets West proves to be the best exhibit yet. Viewers will see inspiring, challenging, beautiful and elegantly executed works inspired by animals, people, still-life, beautiful scenery and life experiences. Each work tells the artist’s story in her own interpretation, through oil, watercolor, graphite, pastel, or bronze. You can support women artists by purchasing one of these beautiful works of art by becoming a collector or becoming a WAOW Partner or becoming a Corporate Sponsor. This year’s Exhibition is in beautiful Annapolis, Maryland, designated a Top 25 Arts Destination by American Style Magazine , at the McBride Gallery, established in 1980 on the historic City Docks. It is now located on upper Main Street. Annapolis has the designation as being in Top Ten Most Walkable Cities, by American Style .

WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST (WAOW) is a non-profit organization of 300 juried members across the United States, Australia, and Canada with the objectives of uniting women artists, elevating awareness of art created by women and encouraging technical excellence. WAOW supports members through education, workshops, and mentoring with a focus on encouraging both emerging and established artists in business and professional practices. WAOW members are publicly promoted through national advertising, exhibitions, online and social media. It is one of the oldest established organization dedicated to women artists in the nation. We are honored to be celebrating 52 years of exhibitions with this year’s national exhibit at McBride Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland. We appreciate the generosity of Cynthia McBride and our sponsors for our 52nd National Exhibition. The fine artwork of various genres and mediums in this exhibition has been through a stringent selection process and features 115 artists from 28 states, representing three countries and two continents. Members are initially juried to become a WAOW member and then must submit work to a seven member jury for acceptance into the national exhibition. We are very pleased and proud to present the work of these outstanding, talented members of WAOW in our 52nd National Exhibition, East Meets West. 52nd National Exhibition Judge Hiu Lai Chong

HIU LAI CHONG is an oil painter who uses vivid colors and sensitive brushstrokes to express mood and feeling in her paintings. She is inspired by the people she meets, the history and cultures she encounters, and the beauty of nature all around her. Her work often includes unique compositions with a refreshing variety of subject matter. Her paintings have been collected by museums, featured in newspapers, magazine covers and books. Her awards include the prestigious Landscape Painting Award of Excellence from Oil Painters of America’s National Exhibition, Plein Air Easton Grand Prize and Artist’s Choice Awards, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts Museum Purchase Award, the Laguna Plein Air Collector’s Choice

Award, the Maui Plein Air and En Plein Air Texas Best in Show, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine and Southwest Art Magazine’s awards for the “Artist for the New Century”, and the Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition Certificate of Excellence. Hiu Lai is a signature member of Oil Painters of America, American Society of Marine Artists, Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and artist member of California Art Club and the Washington Society of Landscape Painters. Currently she enjoys teaching workshops when not painting on location or in her studio in Rockville, Maryland.

PRIYA AHLAWAT VIENNA OPERA HOUSE

Vienna Opera House is from my trip to Vienna in Austria. Constructed between 1861-1869 in a neo-Renaissance style, Vienna Opera House is considered one of the finest opera houses in the world. Artists such as Moritz von Schwind painted the frescoes in the foyer, and the famous “Zauberflöten” (Magic Flute) series of frescoes on the veranda. In 1869, the opera house opened with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth, and the popularity of the building grew over the years under the artistic influence of many famous directors. Today, Vienna Opera House is considered one of the best opera houses in the world and is known for its first-class ballet and opera performances.

She has been featured by Southwest Art Magazine as an Artist to Watch, and been on the Board of Directors of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. PRIYA AHLAWAT CAFFÈ FLORIAN’S SALON OF MIRRORS

Caffè Florian’s Salon of Mirrors is from my trip to Venice in Italy, and of the oldest Coffeehouse in Italy, and in the world— Caffè Florian. Its windows have silently witnessed some incredible history unfold inside and outside for three centuries. This timeless institution has been serving coffee on a silver tray with a water chaser and a cookie to locals and visitors of the lagoon city since 1720. The Coffeehouse feels like a jewel box with a series of intimate ornate gilded Neo-Baroque Salons and history continues to live in these gem-like rooms. The Salon in this piece is known as Sala degli Specchi (Salon of Mirrors).

16” X 16” — Oil $2,150 Inner Peace is that state we all crave in this everchanging and rather chaotic world. My model Dezi found just such a moment when a favorite piece of music started playing. The strong contrasting colors of the background created the perfect foil to her serene demeanor.

The endlessly changing landscapes of the human face has intrigued and inspired her to become even more expressive in her design and paint application. Deborah is a long time member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society.

Azaleas is a tribute to this year’s exuberant display of the azalea bushes in my front yard in St. Louis, Missouri. The afternoon sun shining on and through some of the translucent magenta blossoms and the contrast of those illuminated petals with the darker tones of adjacent blossoms not hit by the light made a striking pattern.

CAROL AMOS • WAOW Master • AZ • www.carolamos.com Carol’s oil paintings of plants, landscapes and wildlife focus on vibrant colors, shapes, and contrasts between sun and shadow. They often include details, yet retain a painterly quality. Carol is a WAOW Master Signature member, a Signature member of American Women Artists and a member of the Salmagundi Club New York, Oil Painters of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, and Hoosier Salon. She also shows her work in western art sales such as at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Mountain Oyster Club.

I am not what you would call “a slave to local color.” Magenta is an exploration of complementary colors and dramatic composition. She is a loose interpretation of the figure while using gesture to express beauty. My goal is to build a composition that can draw people from across a room. For my recent work, I’m embracing my inner contemporary artist. In particular, I am emphasizing line and pattern in more direct ways. I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had in my career because I’ve stopped worrying what anyone thinks and am diving in head first to express my emotions with paint. I am telling stories that come from my life and experiences.

After spending years plein air painting and painting the figure from life, she spends more time in the studio now pushing boundaries. Heather was born in Shiloh, NJ, has lived in many other states and now resides in Myakka City, Florida with her husband of 28 years.

While visiting Denver a few years ago, I saw the Monet exhibition at the Denver Art Museum. It was a packed house but quiet as museum exhibits often are because they use headphone tours. It creates this eerie experience of people floating past the paintings. My goal is to build a composition that can draw people from across a room. For my recent work, I’m embracing my inner contemporary artist.

Wanderlust runs deep, with travel almost a basic need for me as a human and artist. These two sailboats are longing for their next adventure. Sail with Me says I want to take that trip and have you there by my side … sharing the view. That’s a goal with all my work. To take us somewhere together. Painting on location – plein air – makes every day a treasure unlike any other. After I had already been standing at my easel for hours, sailing school students rolled a parade of small craft out onto the water. It was magical. Multiple triangles sketched in behind the two main boats mark the sails of those travelers off on their day’s journey. Showing the way.

Her 100 Faces in 100 Days Project (2011) led to painting moving subjects in plein air. Banks is a Signature member of American Women Artists and the Washington Society of Landscape Painters.

While witnessing the wonders of childhood as a grandparent, although my paintbrush was stowed away, my artist brain was envisioning this painting. It was a story to be told. Modeling dough was well used for a variety of increasingly odd colored “desserts” we all had to try. I wasn’t a painter when my kids were small. What joy it is to be able to re-live, re-witness and capture that magic now.

TRICIA BASS BEST PLACE IN THE GARDEN

I love painting “en plein air” (French for “open air”). As a kid I was always happiest playing outside and mucking it up with my siblings and friends. I guess it’s a natural progression to enjoy painting outdoors even more than I do in my studio, with the exception of those bitter, cold Colorado days. While I enjoy painting the classic landscapes and have no end to inspiration in the West, painting in a garden is truly my “happy place”. This work was painted at the Denver Botanic Gardens. I particularly enjoy

this hidden niche, filled with weathered, classical columns.

Sometimes the hardscape in a garden adds just the right touch for creating an outdoor still life.

TRICIA BASS • WAOW Associate • CO • www.TriciaBass.com Tricia paints with a painterly, expressive style with a touch of Russian influence. She lives in Colorado and enjoys painting throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Bass has won a number of significant awards and honors as seen on her website and has twice been a selected participant at the highly prestigious American Impressionist Society National Exhibition. She has been an artist for almost her entire life and a painter for over twenty years.

NANETTE BIERS LAKE MERRITT REGATTA

Lake Merritt is a beautiful oasis of sparkling water and green parkland right in the middle of the large metropolis of Oakland, CA. Strolling the lawns and walkways surrounding the lake, you’re likely to encounter multiple clusters of resident ducks and geese dozing, waddling, and swimming. The geese in particular like to sail in flotillas around a small island just offshore. I was lucky enough to get a beautiful shot of them rounding the island’s corner and I knew instantly that I would turn it into a painting.

NANETTE BIERS • WAOW Associate • CA • www.nanettebiers.com After a successful 30-year career as a nationally-recognized commercial illustrator, in 2009 Nanette Biers shifted the focus of her career to creating fine art paintings, primarily landscapes depicting West Marin’s hills and ranches as well as other California locales. She also began painting en plein air, adding a new source of excitement to her work. Over the past ten years she has been juried into many prestigious group shows, often alongside nationally recognized painters, and has won a variety of awards.

NANETTE BIERS SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

This piece is a plein air painting. I set up along the roadside and eventually the young homeowner emerged to chat. He told me his grandfather had bought this 1964 Ford Falcon and later sold it to a man who created a custom shell for it. Years later, the grandson bought it back, hoping to restore it. A memorable day of painting!

TINA BOHLMAN FIXER UPPER

Fixer Upper is an old two-story house in a historic district of Galveston, Texas. The late afternoon light casting long shadows on the building stopped me in my tracks! I quickly sketched a small value and composition study, then, starting with light values in the sky and background, I established a pattern of sunlight and shadow based on my value sketch. At that point, I was committed to the composition and didn’t make changes even though it was a race with the sun as the light continued to shift. My process is traditional in that I paint from light values to dark ones, reserving the white of the paper for the brightest accents.

TINA BOHLMAN • WAOW Signature • TX • www.tinabohlman.com Native Texan Tina Bohlman, painting professionally for 50 years, is often seen painting in the historic districts of her home town of Waxahachie Texas. Self taught, this award-winning artist prefers watercolor but occasionally works in oil. A frequent guest artist for painting demonstrations and workshops, her work is collected worldwide with her originals in private and corporate collections in 34 states, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Republic of Benin, West Africa.

YVONNE BONACCI A GLORIOUS RIDE

This painting was an inspiration from all my years of riding horseback with my cousins and friends. I lived very close to my cousins growing up, and we all had horses. It was so much fun riding and playing dress-up on horseback with them. I invited my two cousins and a friend over for a photo shoot and had them ride across my field on two of my horses, and one of theirs. The picture came out so nice, I couldn’t wait to paint it. The feeling of fun on horseback. So many memories.

MARILYNN BRANDENBURGER NOVEMBER GARDEN

Several years ago, wearied by the threats of Covid, political turmoil and global warming, I decided I needed to bring the calming effect of flowers into my life and work. Since then I have been painting Colorado gardens and the extravagant displays of wildflowers that appear every summer all across the Rocky Mountain Front Range. In addition to creating studio paintings, I am also making illustrated journals as I visit these places and documenting my growing fascination with both cultivated and native plants, their habitats and their crucial role in supporting Colorado ecosystems. The painting I have submitted for this show, “November Garden,” is of a rock garden in the Gardens on Spring Creek, in Fort Collins, CO, and a part of this ongoing series.

MARILYNN BRANDENBURGER • WAOW Assoc. • CO • marilynnbrandenburger.com Marilynn Brandenburger has been painting and exhibiting professionally since 1980. Marilynn’s paintings have appeared in more than 80 national exhibitions and multiple publications. She specializes in painting landscapes and gardens, in ink, watercolor and gouache. Marilynn grew up in suburban Chicago, attended Tulane University and earned a Master’s degree at Florida Atlantic University. In 2014, she and her husband moved to Colorado where they enjoy exploring the gardens and parks of their adopted state at every opportunity.

Lately, I have expanded my interest in landscape painting to focus on florals. There is a challenge to capturing the delicacy and subtleness of blossoms. I like studying the way the flowers turn and dance, the light catching the edge of a petal, the variety of greens and shapes of their leaves. I paint from life, bringing bouquets up to my studio—in this case, Amaryllis flowers I grew this past winter. Since flowers tend to fade and droop, I also photograph them for when I want to study their structure more closely. It’s a very peaceful process that brings me joy. Each flower is a portrait, each painting a conversation. I am awed by the beauty around me, and the living Spirit of Nature.

LANI BROWNING • WAOW Associate • MD • www.lanibrowning.com Lani Browning, an award-winning plein air oil painter for over twenty five years, is known for her distinctive skill with colors, and the quiet elegance and soft tonalism of her paintings. Her travels around the country and abroad, and her love of the land have contributed to her focus on the landscape. Her years of experience show in her confident and mature brushwork. While still enjoying the landscape, Lani is currently exploring a new vision of expressing herself by focusing on flowers and still life. She resides on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

JEANNE CARDANA LILY AND FROG

Lily and Frog was inspired by my backyard pond that graced us with the blooming of water lilies and the appearance of a pair of Northwest Red Legged Frogs. The pond has become a refuge for us and this year, became the breeding home to several Northwest Green Tree frogs and Red Legged frogs.

JEANNE CARDANA • WAOW Associate • OR • www.jeannecardana.com Oregon artist, Jeanne Cardana’s works are primarily done with high quality color and graphite pencils. Jeanne’s training as a Biological/Wildlife Illustrator, attention to detail, strong connection with the natural world, and love and lifetime experience with horses translate into her work as an artist. Spanning 40 years, Jeanne has produced and exhibited award-winning equine, wildlife, and western art pieces. Jeanne is a WAOW Associate, signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and Cowgirl Artists of America, and an Elected Artist of the American Artists Professional League.

To me there are few creatures more captivating than a wolf. Once hunted almost to extinction, the timber wolf is making a comeback due mostly to our increased understanding of their vital role in the health of our ecology. My series of wolf paintings are a tribute to this amazing breed. My images are my personal, artistic interpretation of the natural world and I like them to be clear and descriptive. In this particular painting, I wished to capture the big male’s inscrutable expression. He was staring at me for the longest time and I was able to catch the look in his eye. I was glad to have a long lens as I did not wish to get any closer!

It was very satisfying to paint this dignified young man from the Fort Hall, Idaho Powwow. There is a sense of confidence most of the small dancers display at the powwows, evident even in the smallest toddlers. This sweet boy was no exception. It seemed fitting to give the painting an American flag as a backdrop because I’ve always been impressed with the patriotism of the Native American tribes. They proudly present the flag along with the Native American staff at their events during the Grand Entry. They honor their veterans and show them the utmost respect. Thus the title American Boy seemed the only choice.

Who says blondes have more fun? I do. Or at least they ARE more fun, perhaps. I loved painting this lovely mare with the beautiful pale amber coat and white mane strikingly balanced against the dark background. This is my framer’s horse and a favorite subject for me. I have painted her in various sizes and back grounds, always enjoying the process, but none of the backgrounds are as dynamic as the play of dark against light as in this piece.

I t was a hundred degree day, a strong north wind and fifty artists in a dirt parking lot competing in a plein air event in Sedona. Dust swirling, we had to pick out a feature we could see from the bottom of the valley: Red cliffs above, trees and Oak Creek below, I picked out a bluff that the locals nicknamed “Snoopy.” On the top of the ridge above me, a windblown formation which looked like “Woodstock” caught my attention as the lightshifted to full sunlight. I quickly laid in the design and underpaint. The result was this 11” by 14” acrylic and oil jewel.

The gear of the vaquero has always fascinated me. It is a functional art form passed down through centuries. From the bridle and bit to the reins and saddle, the traditional vaquero gear is made by hand and is a work of art in and of itself. In this pencil drawing, I feature a close-up of a bridle horse’s face highlighting the details of his sterling adorned bridle, his braided rawhide bosal with a horsehair mecate rope and his sterling silver spade bit. I loved the challenge of capturing each form and texture and hopefully have honored this rich and beautiful tradition. The drawing is created on hot pressed watercolor panel which has been coated in multiple layers of a special acrylic spray to protect it.

The enchanted landscape of northern New Mexico is a panoramic blend of sun, sand and stone set against an endless western sky. Such is the inspiration for me, as a painter, and for this particular work. The high desert is subtle and quiet. The light has a life of its own and a simple glance yields nothing of its genuine beauty. It takes time and some effort to “really see” the warms and cools both in light and shadow tip-toeing through this rugged landscape. It is a shy land and only gives up her secrets to those who take the time to sit and see.

MARGARET DRAKE KIOWA BLACK LEGGINGS WARRIOR

The Kiowa people have a group called the Kiowa Black Leggings Warrior Society. Every year, the Society holds a ceremony demonstrating respect for their war veterans. Members of this exclusive society wear regalia that has not changed since their customs were first documented in the 1870s, including a roach headdress of porcupine quills, royal red capes, beaded breastplates and black leggings covered by colorful loincloths. The stories of these Kiowa warriors stretches back centuries through oral histories. The red capes pay tribute to a member who took a similar cape off of a Mexican officer during a long ago raid. To sculpt this piece, I attended the ceremony and obtained permission from the elders, since t he ceremony and the regalia are copyrighted.

The Ponca are a small Lower Missouri tribe of the Sioux family. They belonged to the great complex of Plains Indian tribes. In 1879, as a result of action by the United States government, the tribe was split into two bands, the Southern Ponca, and the Northern Ponca. Dancing and ceremonial activity occupied most of the Plains Indians’ spare time and it can be said that a third or more of a Ponca’s year was taken up preparing for or participating in dances. The three most important Ponca ceremonial dances are the Sundance, the Pipe Dance and the War Dance.

That is precisely what occurred in October, three weeks before the rare Super Blue Full Moon. I practice Native American Animal Medicine and interestingly, Blue Heron Medicine represents “self-reflection.” In this time of oppressive restriction, it seemed apropos that we all had our own universal moment to reflect on what that may mean for us individually and collectively.

It feels as though moments of peace and tranquility are rare and sporadic at best these days. I will often revisit my father’s farm in western Maryland since he has passed… It is still a location of powerful tranquil landscapes where grazing beasts and lush farmland coexist in perfect harmony. I traipse up to the top of the hill and overlook a scene which always manages to fill me with wonder and hope. On this particular twilight evening, I was rewarded with this transcendent vista, the sun sparkled as it glimmered in a softened rainbow hued sky, which culminated in a violet dusky tone where sky met land. I was filled with a deep sense of protection and was reminded that we are never alone and are in fact guided.

I spent many years pursuing a variety of career paths including high school teaching and financial planning, but it wasn’t until I picked up a paint brush that I finally found what I was put here to do. Painting didn’t come naturally. I enjoy the challenge of creating an image that looks realistic but when the viewer gets closer they see a plethora of colours and textures that are created when mixed on the canvas rather than the palette.
