MARY LOU PAPE AND I MUST GO

I enjoy painting portraits of historical figures, including Native Americans, children and the many individuals who have shaped our past. I often attend photo events with reenactors who have researched the clothing and tools these people used in their everyday lives. This wonderful mountain man was a perfect subject and inspired my title from the famous quote by John Muir: “The mountains are calling and I must go.” I transfer my drawing and tone the surface. I then begin building up the many layers of oil paint I use in my work, paying particular attention to my drawing and values as I go. I use glazing and scumbling techniques to hopefully achieve a depth and richness of color to my final painting.

20” x 16” — Oil $2,600
