TRISH WEND ALL THAT GLIMMERS
Have you ever looked at a collection of vegetables and discerned some distinct personalities? I do all the time. They loll about and look at each other. I thought it would be interesting to have luminosity in a good portion of the painting. Not only does the shimmer on the onions play a part, but so does the majestic copper vessel. The inspiration here is a classic Dutch still life painting, which is defined by a strong contrast between dark and light, and the use of rich color. This genre can be quite formal, which is not always appropriate today. I think the formality is tempered by the fact that the players are mostly all vegetables. They are humble by definition.
