Michael Chesley Johnson, Judge of Awards

Each of Michael’s colorful landscapes depict a “moment in time.” Evoking the brilliant light of the American Southwest and Maine’s coastal areas, they represent a deep meditation by the artist on the world he inhabits. In addition to painting full-time, Michael teaches plein air painting workshops and runs painting retreats in scenic locations. A frequent writer for art magazines, he wrote his latest book, Beautiful Landscape Painting Outdoors: Mastering Plein Air , for both beginners and experienced painters. Michael is a nationally-known teacher, giving workshops across the U.S. as well as seasonally in Maine and the Southwest. A frequent writer for both The Artist’s Magazine and Pastel Journal, he is the author of several books, including Outdoor Study to Studio: Take Your Plein Air Paintings to the Next Level and Backpacker Painting: Outdoors with Oil & Pastel , all of which are available on Amazon.com. He has many videos available, as well.
