WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST

This exhibition catalog exemplifies the heart of Women Artists of the West (WAOW). For over 54 years we have worked to present the work of women artists through our shows. Women Artists of the West was formed in order to recognize the quality of women artists’ work in what was then a male-dominated art world. Today we are known as the oldest women’s national juried art organization and we continue to work toward more recognition for women in the art world. Our organization’s members are from all parts of the western hemisphere and have been juried into our membership. To be a part of our national shows they are juried again, and to receive awards their work goes through another jury process. The results are in this catalog. I hope you will enjoy seeing the quality and variety in style, subject matter, and medium in the work that is presented here.

They serve to inspire and demonstrate the diversity and rich texture of our individual artists. More than 100 artists from across the county are featured on the walls of the Phippen Museum. WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST Women Artists of the West (WAOW) is a non-profit organization of over 300 juried members across the United States, Australia, and Canada with the objectives of uniting women artists, elevating awareness of art created by women and encouraging technical excellence. WAOW supports members through education, workshops, and mentoring with a focus on encouraging both emerging and established artists in business and professional practices. WAOW members are publicly promoted through national advertising, exhibitions, online and social media. It is one of the oldest established organization dedicated to women artists in the nation. We are honored to be celebrating 54 years of exhibitions with this year’s national exhibit at the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona. We appreciate the generosity of the Phippen and our sponsors for our 54th National Exhibition. The fine artwork of various genres and mediums in this exhibition has been through a stringent selection process and features 90 artists from the United States, Canada and Australia. Members are initially juried to become a WAOW member and then must submit work to a seven member jury for acceptance into the national exhibition. We are very pleased and proud to present the work of these outstanding, talented members of WAOW in our 54th National Exhibition, Dreamweavers. Jessica Lawrence has had numerous one person shows at galleries representing her work. She has also participated in prestigious museum shows such as the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale in Cody, Wyoming since 2010, and the esteemed CowgirlUp! invitational in Wickenburg, Arizona since 2014.

In 2018, she received the Governor’s Choice Award at CowgirlUp! invitational art show.

In 2019, she was selected as Artist in Residence at the Briton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming.

In the 2020 CowgirlUp! invitational, Jessica received the Patron’s Choice Award.

WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST

Women Artists of the West is excited to exhibit at the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona for its 54th National Exhibition and Sale. The Phippen Museum is named after George Phippen, who was co-founder and first president of the Cowboy Artists of America. The Phippen Museum’s Permanent Collection holds close to 800 pieces of fine art. Some of its permanent exhibits include two studio replicas, a Western Heritage Gallery, history of the cowgirl and an Arizona rancher and Cowboy Hall of Fame. Plein air painters will love painting in the adjacent Granite Dells and the red rocks of Sedona which are within a one-hour drive. The Grand Canyon’s majestic vistas are only two hours away.

PRIYA AHLAWAT CAFÉ AMERICAIN

Located in the iconic building of Amsterdam’s famous American Hotel and dating back to 1902, Café Américain is the oldest Grand Café in the Netherlands and the premises along with the Café are National Heritage sites. Café Américain, known as ‘the living room of Amsterdam’ has attracted intellectuals, artists, writers, actors and musicians for decades. With all of its original Art Deco glamour of the roaring twenties in place, the Café’s interior is a beautiful Art Nouveau extravaganza of large arched ceilings, tall carved columns, enormous frosted-glass antique Tiffany chandeliers from the 1920s, original Tiffany lamps, and leaded-glass high windows with Art Deco stained-glass details.

She has served as a juror for national and regional juried art exhibitions and been on the Board of Directors of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society. Espresso and Cappuccino is from my trip to the magical city of Verona in Italy. City so beautiful, it inspired Shakespeare to write one of the most romantic stories of all times: “Romeo and Juliet”. Opened in 1895 in the heart of Verona’s old town centre, Caffè Vittorio Emanuele is one of Verona’s oldest cafés where guests can sit on the city’s famous long marble slabbed sidewalk called ‘Liston’ on Piazza Bra. It faces the iconic Verona Arena Roman Amphitheater, which is the largest open-air Opera theater in the world. The ambience inside is ‘old world’ elegance, thanks to its personnel in elegant uniforms, marble floors and columns, antique chandeliers and the impeccable charm of its guests.

20” X 22” — Oil $3,550 I spotted these ranchers at the counter of the historic Montgomery Café in Ft. Worth just after they’d unloaded their livestock at the Will Rogers Center. Not your weekend cowboys, but the real thing with real mud on their jeans and hot coffee in their mugs.

The endlessly changing landscapes of the human face has intrigued and inspired her to become even more expressive in her design and paint application. Deborah is also a long time member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society.

One morning there was a magical light illuminating the focused worker at a local bake shop. Truly, with her curls glowing and her cheeks rosy, the baker Jacqui, was elevated to the level of a heavenly pie maker.

Athabasca Falls is located in Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. My husband and I had planned a “bucket list” trip to Alaska which included a trip along the ALCAN Highway. I visited this waterfall and was awestruck. In this painting, I captured only a portion of the actual falls, for the best composition. The waterfall has an 80’ drop and is considered the most powerful waterfall, and rated a Class 5. You can experience white water rafting from below the falls, rafting downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper. The trip to Jasper and these waterfalls should be on your bucket list. I found this place so inspirational and powerful.

While on drive between Missoula and Great Falls, I was inspired by the ice jams along the river that glistened in the sunlight along the banks of the Blackfoot River. I loved the colorful willows that cast dramatic shadows across the snow. The sunlight on the snow and the bright colors of the sky made this place very inviting and I knew I had to capture this snowscape on canvas.

Welcome home. In winter, bare trees offer the perfect view of the sunset and this nook gets even cozier. It’s called French Corner because an AirBnB stay in the South of France inspired the look and feel of my favorite spot. This is it.

Raised in rural Central Florida, she explored the cypress swamps and palmetto forests finding a sense of wonder and peace in the natural world there. Upon earning her BA from the University of Toledo she moved to Prescott and fell in love with all things Southwest, from the flora and fauna to the Native American and pioneer influences of the people inhabiting the region. Heather’s work is in collections all over the world and she is currently the only woman to have a commissioned public sculpture in downtown Prescott, AZ.

NANETTE BIERS MORNING AT LAND’S END

11” x 14” — Oil $1,100

There are many views of the Golden Gate Bridge that millions are familiar with. Some of them from inside the bay, some aerial, and some from the north or south ends of the bridge. But this particular view, which is seen from the cliffs along Land’s End at the northwest tip of the city, is more unusual. A dirt road runs alongside the cliffs, and this painting began as a plein air done from that road. I had to be there early, because the window of time when the light edged the cliffs in just the way I wanted was very narrow. But what a beautiful moment to capture!!

NANETTE BIERS • WAOW Associate • CA • www.nanettebiers.com After a successful 30-year career as a nationally-recognized commercial illustrator, in 2009 Nanette Biers shifted the focus of her career to creating fine art paintings, primarily landscapes depicting West Marin’s hills and ranches as well as other California locales. She also began painting en plein air, adding a new source of excitement to her work. Over the past decade she has been juried into many prestigious national exhibitions and won a variety of awards.

Living in Marin County, CA, one gets used to the annual color shifts of the land from the vibrant green hills of winter to the golden wheat color of early summer, and finally to the dullish brown of September. Every year I’m impatient for the color to shift back from brown to green, and when it finally does, I’m out there a lot with my easel and camera, capturing as much as I can with both. I drive by the ranch in this painting all the time. It sits alongside the 101 freeway corridor, so when the cows are out, and the grass is green, I have a field day…literally!!

I often go to Reno, NV to photograph wild mustangs. These two mustangs struck me as being happy and content even though they were thin from one of the worst drought years we have had. I wanted to show their love and contentment for being free, even though times were tough. They are strong horses.

A few Years ago, I held a photo shoot with my cousin and her daughter and some cowgirl friends. This is my cousin and her daughter, which reminds me of my days as a cowgirl on our working ranch and holding a horse for my dad as he opened gates or checked on a sick cow. Light colored horses on light grass were a challenge, but surprisingly I was able to work it out for the best.

The area around Ghost Ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico is the inspiration for this painting. The way the elements have sculpted the rock layers and their color, is breathtaking. It called to me to be immortalized in a painting,..or five. I have done five paintings from the area so far. It is a special place.

This degree supports the needs of the medical community in photography, medical illustration and graphics. I worked as a medical illustrator at a medical school. During this time, I took classes and workshops on my own. In 1987 I decided to paint full time. I have won numerous awards and been represented in eight galleries from Atlanta to Santa Fe.

Both of these paintings are inspired by my garden here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I’ve been slowly planting and growing a ‘Moonlight Garden’ of white flowers, along with a boxwood parterre. Lilacs were my mother’s favorite, so of course I had to plant them! I was excited to try my hand at the

mums with their delicate petals and symmetry. And as always, I enjoy the challenge of painting flowers.

Her travels around the country and abroad, and her love of the land have contributed to her focus on the landscape. Her years of experience show in her confident and mature brushwork. While still enjoying the landscape, Lani is currently exploring a new vision of expressing herself by focusing on flowers and still life. She resides on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

My paintings flow from my curiosity to explore, push boundaries, and to show and share a different way of seeing the world around us. My home and inspiration is the land of the southwestern United States. Travel is the backbone of my work; it Graphic in style, I lean on my early love of drawing and design. I prefer using flat plains of color in unexpected, lyrical ways. Rhythm throughout my paintings is very intentional. Color comes in then as harmony. This particular piece, A Fiery Sky exemplifies that approach with it’s bold color palette, simplified shapes, and use of line to create a sense of movement. I wanted to capture the ever-changing colors of the desert with it’s beautiful, but often unwelcoming vegetation, against a rugged mountain throws me into new circumstances and surroundings.

DEBBIE CARROLL • WAOW Associate • TX • www.debbiecarrollfineart.com Debbie Carroll’s paintings are an interpretation of the arid landscape, flora, fauna and structures of the western United States. She studied studio art at Northern Illinois University and graphic design at The Art Institute of Houston. Travel is the backbone of her work; she likens her curiosity and observational skills to that of a scientist. Though she admires artists who paint realism, she embraces graphic, flat plains of color in unexpected, lyrical rhythms. She uses color harmony intentionally as a way to allow her unique voice and vision to show the familiar through a new lens.

Why did I paint this piece? When I saw the big guy nuzzling his teammate, I couldn’t resist trying to capture the affectionate gesture in pastel. Animals are much more affectionate than humans give them credit for.

The country lifestyle led to an appreciation for nature and wildlife and a strong respect for the culture of the state’s Native Americans. Painting the Western subject matter is now Cherry’s way of giving back to friends, family, and art enthusiasts. In her spare time, Cherry writes an art mystery series.

There’s nothing funnier to watch than when these little guys get to rope and drag calves at a branding. Their chests gets pretty puffed up when they get one roped and bring it to the fire! It’s such an honor for them to be able to rope with the older hands and step up to the plate and hang out with the “ropers”. Most of the time once they get to rope, it’s hard to get them to quit! They absolutely love it!

They patiently taught her how to look at the world with an artist eye by tapping into her abiding love for animals and life well-spent working the land. Being born and raised on a ranch in Colorado gave Sherry the intimate knowledge of her subject. She continually seeks out the moments that “tell a story of the animals and people” that inspire her.

Another one of my favorite horses and my Dad’s best Border Collie dog, “Kendall” and “Blue”. We had just moved pairs from the home place down in the valley to our forest permit in June one spring. This was always our stopping spot to let everybody rest up before the ride back. We had a sandwich, the horses had new grass and the pups all got a snooze, and of course all of us got a big drink of water! Sometimes that trip could be long and hot the first of June. I rode this horse a lot over the years we had him, along with that good old blue eyed dog, we three traveled a lot of miles together.

Her watercolors and oils have sold in various galleries throughout Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona. Jane is a traditional painter and a signature member of Women Artists of the West. Her major exhibitions include CowgirlUp!, the American Academy of Equine Art, the Oil Painters of America, and the Mountain Oyster Club.

This award-winning artist takes inspiration from the world around her, adds a stylization from her own imagination, and using vivid colors and broad brushstrokes, transforms it into something new. A native New Yorker, Lori earned her BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and currently resides in Dallas. Her work can be seen in galleries, plein air shows and private collections nationwide.

For a brief period, I passed this view daily. Each time, it sent my brain into action, not only evaluating the shapes, colors, and light but also reflecting on its endurance. Puppy Love captured a tender moment with these two coyotes. I love seeing them on my hikes and around my home studio. I don’t paint subjects that I don’t know. I love to do lots of research before I start my paintings. There are so many stories to tell! Here are some fun facts about coyotes: they mate for life; coyotes show affection to each other with gentle nuzzles and snuggling; greetings usually occur around dusk. They include nose touches and lots of body contact, squealing and wiggles. The differences between coyotes and wolves are in their snout/muzzles, ears, size and tails. Coyotes have narrower features and longer snouts/muzzles than a wolf. A wolf’s ears are more rounded than the pointed ears of the coyote. Wolves have bushier and shorter tails. Coyotes are shorter, sleeker and lighter on their feet.

Jack rabbits are frequently on my favorite Arizona hiking trails. It is comical when they lower their ears to hide. Lowered ears really mean they are relaxed and trying to keep cool. Their ears up indicates curiosity or on alert. I can’t resist painting the sunlight showing through their ears!

I was speechless the first time I stood under the 3000 foot escarpment known as the Vermillion Cliffs. Unspoiled slick rock in a fantasy world of pale nooks, cool shadows and sunlit rock - a dream world for a painter of landscapes. Since that time, I have learned about her rock layers, landslides, rivers, history, ancient dwellings and “wilder than wild” wildlife. Why this fascination? I simply fell in love at first sight and am charmed by all things there. I am deeply moved by the manner in which the landscape elements speak to one another. Each time I go back, I fall head over heels all over again.

I met this young cow on a bright, cold winter afternoon. I loved the way the light was on her shaggy coat and that pretty white face was in shadow. One reason for the shaggy coat is that she is a cross between a white faced Hereford and a Scottish Highland.

The title of this piece holds a clue to the inspiration behind the intentions of this painting. We have always used gold as a measure of value and worth. Gold is radiant, and many would use words like rare and treasure when describing it. For me, the land is the most precious commodity which we all share and depend upon for our very existence. That quality has been demonstrated in this painting to magnify the reminder, using the abundant golden, wild fields. The color value juxtaposition of the lavender distant mountains and the vibrant fields is a metaphor which is intended to amplify that harmony and balance which we often overlook or take for granted. We are also immersed in a challenging time in our history, and I was intentionally painting a piece which would convey happiness and a sense of hope. We are not lost, only momentarily sleepwalking. We share paradise right now, it’s here, we only need to remember and awaken to the dream.

I was up at 3:00 that morning ready to ship cattle and take some pictures. I had a camera in one hand and reins in the other taking as many pictures as I could gathering pastures at the same time. The subject is as handy as they come and watching him trot around the pens I knew that his image would make for a very special piece that would capture that exact moment in time when he was still the littlest cowpuncher there.

Donkeys have a different charisma from draft horses, the challenge is to capture the attitude, I am also always fascinated with light and reflected light in the shadows, the textures here added an interesting element. I encourage the viewer to look for the notes of pure pigment which are not as evident from a distance, but always a joy to create.

I spent many years pursuing a variety of career paths including high school teaching and financial planning but it wasn’t until I picked up a paint brush that I finally found what I was put here to do. Painting didn’t come naturally. I enjoy the challenge of creating an image that looks realistic but when the viewer gets closer they see a plethora of colors and textures that are created when mixed on the canvas rather than the palette.

FELICIA BIG SISTER

My inspiration for my bronze, Big Sister is sisters, how they hold close relationships, respect and admirations for an older sister. I work directly with oil base clay and live models,capturing a strong likeness along with my own creative vision of simplicity and elegance. When finishing the image I incorporate high polish lines, a dazzle of turquoise, and paint beads to enhance my designs (a recognizable signature of mine for over 30 years) along with different acid washes, known as patinas. Most of my bronzes depict the Native American female, which is expressed in senuous curves, tension of emotion, with minimal forms. I portray the Native American because they are the original inhabitants of our continent, and they should not be forgotten.
