WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST (WAOW) is a non-profit organization of 300 juried members across the United States, Australia, and Canada with the objectives of uniting women artists, elevating awareness of art created by women and encouraging technical excellence. WAOW supports members through education, workshops, and mentoring with a focus on encouraging both emerging and established artists in business and professional practices. WAOW members are publicly promoted through national advertising, exhibitions, online and social media. It is one of the oldest established organization dedicated to women artists in the nation. We are honored to be celebrating 53 years of exhibitions with this year’s national exhibit at the Car riage Factory in Newton, Kansas. We appreciate the generosity of Mary Lee and our sponsors for our 53rd National Exhibition. The fine artwork of various genres and mediums in this exhibition has been through a stringent selection process and features 115 artists from 28 states, representing three countries and two continents. Members are initially juried to become a WAOW member and then must submit work to a seven member jury for acceptance into the national exhibition. We are very pleased and proud to present the work of these outstanding, talented members of WAOW in our 53rd National Exhibition, No Place Like Home. 53rd National Exhibition Judge Kim Casebeer

Kim Casebeer spent her childhood exploring outdoors on her family farm and has a lengthy con nection to the landscape. She travels across the United States to paint en plein air, gathering accurate color studies to bring back to her studio. Casebeer believes the simplicity of the land scape near her home in Manhattan, Kansas has helped her focus on strong design in a composition. Her work often focuses on big skies of the western United States. Casebeer is a Master Signature Member of the American Women Artists, and a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America and the Pastel Society of America. She has participated in The Russell at the C.M. Russell Museum, Small Works, Great Wonders at the National Cowboy Museum, and Night of Artists at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. She has been featured in magazines such as Plein Air Magazine, Art of the West, and Southwest Art. Casebeer is featured in Art of the National Parks book co-authored by Susan Hallsten McGarry and Jean Stern. Her work is featured on the cover of Fine Art Tips by Lori McNee. Casebeer has work in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the United States. She is represented by galleries in Arizona, Wyoming, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado and Oklahoma.

for music, arts, and innovative dining.

The endlessly changing landscapes of the human face has intrigued and inspired her to become even more expressive in her design and paint application. Deborah is also a long time member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society.

My ancestors homesteaded property in Northern Illinois, and the family farm continued into the 1940s. The stories, photos and heirlooms passed to my mother and then to me. As I drive through the countryside, I notice the passing of many farms into ruin and neglect. When the sun shines on the ruin, I often stop, take photos, and share my impressions in watercolor paintings. …passing of an era told in watercolor.

Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in private and corporate collections in seven countries and exhibited in two U.S. embassies. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in America. Her work is included in the books,The Best of Silk Painting and The Fine Art of Painting on Silk.

Big Storm Coming conveys the beauty along with the ominous specter of a heavy rain storm approaching across an open expanse of the western plains. The newly mown yellow field at the horizon catches a brief ray of sun through the clouds that obscure the darker fields in the foreground. The low channel across the field in the foreground will soon be filled with rainwater!

CAROL AMOS • WAOW Master • AZ • www.carolamos.com Carol’s oil paintings of plants, landscapes and wildlife focus on vibrant colors, shapes, and contrasts between sun and shadow. They often include details, yet retain a painterly quality. Carol is a WAOW Master Signature member, a Signature member of American Women Artists and a member of the Salmagundi Club New York, Oil Painters of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, and Hoosier Salon. She also shows her work in western art sales such as at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Mountain Oyster Club.

I was invited to show at Rock Creek Cattle Company near Deer Lodge, MT in late August. There was some smoke in the area from forest fires which gave a red glow in the morning sun to the entire landscape. The smoke created so much atmosphere it was quite beautiful.

Mountain Blooms captures two of my favorite features of Telluride – the flower boxes that line the center median of Colorado Avenue and the morning mountain blue beyond. It feels like heaven painting there.

Her 100 Faces in 100 Days Project (2011) led to painting moving subjects in plein air. Banks is a Signature member of American Women Artists and the Washington Society of Landscape Painters.

This old fence-line dancing through the snow somewhere in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana caught my eye and appealed to my sense of pattern and rhythm that I enjoy in a composition. The play of light, shadow and color on the old slats held my interest. Sometimes a snowy day can be a great opportunity to observe the snowy simplicity and entropy in our environment. Beauty surrounds us!

She lives in Colorado and enjoys painting throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Bass has won a number of significant awards and honors as seen on her website and has twice been a selected participant at the highly prestigious American Impressionist Society National Exhibition. She has been an artist for almost her entire life and a painter for over twenty years.

My home patio is decorated with colorful Mexican Talavera pottery. My favorite flower is the geranium, and it has appeared in many of my paintings. The combination of the flowers, the colorful pot design, and the light casting the shadow on an adobe wall begged to be painted.

CAROLYN C. BELL • WAOW Associate • TX • www.carolyncbell.com Texas artist, Carolyn C. Bell, has been painting the colors, textures and architecture of the southwest and beyond since high school. Light and color dominate the realistic representations of this unique area of the country. Training in commercial art techniques, and workshops with notable artists have honed artistic skills. NANETTE BIERS RUSSIAN RIVER REFLECTIONS

On September 8, 2022, I went out for a Paint ‘n Swim excursion at Johnson’s Beach in Guerneville along the Russian River in 107 degree heat. By the time I finished packing up my painting gear in the mid-afternoon, I was approaching heat exhaustion....which, ironically, made my plunge into the cool water afterwards nearly a moment of pure ecstasy. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was one of the best swimming experiences of my life, partly fueled by having finished a painting of the waters I love!

NANETTE BIERS • WAOW Associate • CA • www.nanettebiers.com After a successful 30-year career as a nationally-recognized commercial illustrator, in 2009 Nanette Biers shifted the focus of her career to creating fine art paintings, primarily landscapes depicting West Marin’s hills and ranches as well as other California locales. She also began painting en plein air, adding a new source of excitement to her work. Over the past ten years she has been juried into many prestigious group shows, often alongside nationally recognized painters, and has won a variety of awards.

I really enjoyed painting our beloved model, Chuck, at an open studio session at the Scottsdale Artists’ School back in January. He always had a smile on his face or a witty joke to lighten the hearts of whoever he came in contact with. I was very sad to learn that Chuck passed away recently (on May 6th). I feel fortunate to have captured him and his spirit months before his passing. Rest in peace, Chuck.

Ashwini grew up in south India and her formal education was in science and engineering. After graduate school and working in the corporate world for a few years here in the U.S, she decided to pursue art full time. Ashwini’s art education has been primarily through workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. She is currently an instructor at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and her work is represented by Ballard’s Fine Art gallery in Sheridan, WY. Her current focus is on painting portraits and flowers.

I spent a nice length of time in Zion National Park, attempting to capture the grandeur and beauty of this magnificent landscape. Late afternoons are usually my favorite time to capture the “soul” of any place.

She was Vice President of Illustrators of Los Angeles in 1973 and advertising chairperson from 1987 – 1996 for Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA). In 2000, she created the Clymer Museum catalog, and was included in the 2005 “10 Projects in Plein Air.” She also has created many murals including one for the U.S. Air Force, Mt. San Antonio College, and Toppenish, Washington.

I wanted to capture the protective nature of a mother goose as she shields her babies from a Spring snow shower. The goslings, portrayed as fluffy balls of downy feathers, huddle beneath their mother’s wings, finding warmth and safety. The painting portrays the tender relationship between the mother and her goslings.

Self taught, this award-winning artist prefers watercolor but occasionally works in oil. A frequent guest artist for painting demonstrations and workshops, her work is collected worldwide with her originals in private and corporate collections in 34 states, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Republic of Benin, West Africa.

The inspiration for this piece was from photos I had taken at the Draft Horse Classic Show in Grass Valley, CA. I spotted this lovely Belgian Horse just waiting to enter the arena. I couldn’t wait to paint this beautiful horse with such a kind eye. I love to capture the character of all the animals and people that I paint, and she definitely caught my eye.

One recent fall morning, I painted en plein air at a Day of the Dead celebration where one of the dancing girls particularly caught my eye. I could not wait to get back to the studio to paint her again in her flowing ruffled blue dress. Her pose captured a confident attitude that came from celebrating life and heritage.

I loved balancing the delicate structure of the bird skull next to the vibrancy of the orange. One has turned into a beautiful sculpture and the other is ready to feed a life. The painting represents life and death, with the plump fruit and the fragile remnants of the skull.

I paint the beauty with the macabre side by side. Having my own experience with mental illness, substance abuse and anxiety I know the struggle of pushing through the dark to get to the light. I capture those feelings and paint them as strengths, as dreams, as patience, as goddesses, and life and death.

Dogwood trees are one of my favorite trees to have in a garden. When we moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland I planted four dogwood trees along the garden walkway...the white blossoms of the dogwoods are breathtaking beautiful when in bloom. How could I not paint them?

Her travels around the country and abroad, and her love of the land have contributed to her focus on the landscape. Her years of experience show in her confident and mature brushwork. While still enjoying the landscape, Lani is currently exploring a new vision of expressing herself by focusing on flowers and still life. She resides on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Inspired by my granddaughter, Stella, who met her cousin, Cora, for the first time when they were two years old. They were visiting my mother at her retirement facility and found common ground at the baby grand piano. This piece has resonated with many who have viewed it - bringing back memories of their own childhood experiences with a sibling, or with music. For me, it has become a treasured memory of a special time with my family.

Jeanne’s training as a Biological/Wildlife Illustrator, attention to detail, strong connection with the natural world, and love and lifetime experience with horses translate into her work as an artist. Spanning 40 years, Jeanne has produced and exhibited award-winning equine, wildlife, and western art pieces. Jeanne is a WAOW Associate, signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and Cowgirl Artists of America, and an Elected Artist of the American Artists Professional League.

Our yard is full of birds and birdsong, and the redwing blackbirds are regular visitors. I also seethese harbingers of spring at a popular wildlife refuge. I decided to paint them in their natural native habitat doing a bit of “story telling”

The country lifestyle led to an appreciation for nature and wildlife and a strong respect for the culture of the state’s Native Americans. Painting the Western subject matter is now Cherry’s way of giving back to friends, family, and art enthusiasts. In her spare time, Cherry writes an art mystery series.

SHERRY COBB-KELLEHER GIVE A BOY A ROPE

This painting is one that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I wanted to capture the look of deep thoughts in this boy’s face and have the viewer ask “What is he thinking? There is a poem by Amy Potter called “Give A Boy A Rope” it tells a story of a boy growing up with a rope in his hand starting at a very young age until he’s an adult. These are lessons learned through learning how to rope, and be successful at it. Long hours of practice, many roads traveled and many “If I would have just done that,” that lead us through life. I grew up with a rope in one hand and a paint brush in the other, really the lessons are still just about the same!

They patiently taught her how to look at the world with an artist eye by tapping into her abiding love for animals and life well-spent working the land. Being born and raised on a ranch in Colorado gave Sherry the intimate knowledge of her subject. She continually seeks out the moments that “tell a story of the animals and people” that inspire her.

Her work centers on fields, trees, streams and buildings, and the effects of atmosphere and light upon them. Beth has exhibited widely in her home state including Museum of Nebraska Art events and the Nebraska Biennial Exhibition hosted by Omaha’s Gallery 1516. A small rural community near the Nebraska Sandhills is where she lives with her husband, Gary, and their beloved pup dog, Willow.

JANE COLEMAN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

16” x 21.5” — Watercolor $2,500 This is one of many beautiful old homesteads found in Wyoming where children had lots of room to play out-of-doors, take care of their animals, play in the dirt or grass with their favorite toys and use their imaginations. The inner peacefulness and quiet beauty of these old places is disappearing, but still appeals to me many, many years later.”

The tree in this painting lives in Grafton, Utah, just south of Zion National Park. I adore this tree and have stood under it many times painting. On my most recent visit though, I just wanted to celebrate this magnificent Cottonwood which is close to 300 years old. Indigenous people tell a story of a little star who hid in a Cottonwood tree so as to hear the sounds and songs of humans. I think about this story when I paint close to a Cottonwood and I always sing a bit so as not to disappoint the little star.

Once in a blue moon, or a silvery one, for that matter, a special relationship, that has no right to exist does… A few years back--four to be exact, I began to leave raw eggs out under a large sycamore tree in my backyard for a fox family that shared my domain. As the Queen of this particular realm, all of my subjects are adored and protected. I can’t rightly say how that blossomed into a full-fledged love affair where Pavy and I – short for Pavlova- referencing Pavlov’s salivating dogs, came to become family for each other. We meet every morning and evening where I often sing “You Are My Sunshine”, or “Buffalo Gals Won’t You Come Out Tonight!” This painting was the result of one frosty December morning when the moon had not quite set, and was shining through the woods behind her, I knew I had to paint it.

Having my morning coffee from my couch in the living room looking out the windows is always a treat, especially in the spring. Coyotes, javelina, bobcats, and birds of all kinds pass by. My favorite is the Gambel Quail. In the winter they seem to disappear, but when the weather warms and they are feeling amorous, the calls of a male in love can be heard. On this particular morning a handsome male quail landed on the neighbors flower pot sitting atop a pillar. His cute pose and his intentions are the nspiration for Sittin’ Pretty.
