WOMEN ARTISTS OF THE WEST

This beautiful catalog exemplifies the heart of Women Artists of the West (WAOW). For over 53 years we have worked to present the work of women artists through our shows. Women Artists of the West was formed in order to recognize the quality of women artists’ work in what was then a male-dominated art world. Today we are known as the oldest women’s national juried art organization and we continue to work toward more recognition for women in the art world. Our organization’s members are from all parts of the western hemisphere and have been juried into our membership. To be a part of our national shows they are juried again, and to receive awards their work goes through another jury process. The results are in this beautiful catalog. I hope you will enjoy seeing the quality and variety in style, subject matter, and medium in the work that is presented here.

Amy Evans Co-President, WAOW Master Signature Emeritus

I proudly welcome you to the Women Artists of the West’s 53rd National Juried Exhibition! The paintings and sculptures presented in No Place Like Home celebrate people, places, creatures, and moments in our lives. They serve to inspire and demonstrate the diversity and rich texture of our individual artists. More than 100 artists from across the county are featured on the walls of the Carriage Factory Gallery. Feast on the art!

Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and

located next to the White House, The Hamilton Hotel opened in 1860s, in honor

DEBORAH ALLISON CARRIED AWAY

Carried Away is that state we all crave in this ever changing and rather chaotic world. While the world focuses on the art hanging in the museum (though never a bad thing), this young reader has found her bliss in the written word. The ability to immerse herself amidst the crowds is to be admired.

20” X 16” — Oil $2,250

DEBORAH ALLISON • WAOW Associate • NM • www.deborahallisonstudio.com Based in Santa Fe, NM, Deborah Allison has been focusing on portraiture and figurative painting in oils since 2006. 17

JEAN APGAR REMNANTS OF THE PAST

10” x 13.5” — Watercolor $350

My ancestors homesteaded property in Northern Illinois, and the family farm continued into the 1940s. The stories, photos and heirlooms handed to my mother and then to me. As I drive through the countryside, I notice the many farms that have fallen into ruin and neglect. When the sun shines on the ruin, I often stop, take photos, and share my impressions in watercolor paintings. …passing of an era told in watercolor.

JEAN APGAR • WAOW Associate • IL • www.jean-apgar-art.com Jean Apgar lives in Illinois. She earned her B.F.A. and M.A. degrees in painting from Northern Illinois University. 18

CAROL AMOS BIG STORM COMING

16” x 20” — Oil $2,500

Big Storm Coming conveys the beauty along with the ominous specter of a heavy rain storm approaching an open expanse of the western plains. The newly mown yellow field at the horizon catches a brief ray of sun through the clouds that obscure the darker fields in the foreground. The low channel across the field in the foreground will soon be filled with rainwater!

CAROL AMOS • WAOW Master • AZ • www.carolamos.com Carol’s oil paintings of plants, landscapes and wildlife focus on vibrant colors, shapes, and contrasts between sun and shadow. They often include details, yet retain a painterly quality. She also shows her work in western art sales such as at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Mountain Oyster Club.

MARCIA BALLOWE ROCK CREEK

I was invited to show at the Rock Creek Cattle Company near Deer Lodge, MT in late August. There was smoke in the area from recent forest fires which gave a red glow in the morning sun to the entire landscape. The lingering smoke created a beautiful atmosphere.

20

JILL BANKS MOUNTAIN BLOOMS

24” x 24 — Oil $4,950

21

TRICIA BASS BETTER DAYS

11” x 14” — Oil $1,000

This old fence-line dancing through the snow somewhere in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana caught my eye and appealed to my sense of pattern and rhythm that I enjoy in a composition. The play of light, shadow and color on the old slats held my interest. Sometimes a wintry day can be a great opportunity to observe the snowy simplicity and entropy in our environment. Beauty surrounds us!

TRICIA BASS • WAOW Associate • CO • www.TriciaBass.com Tricia paints with a painterly, expressive style with a touch of Russian influence. She lives in Colorado and enjoys painting throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Bass has won a number of significant awards and honors as seen on her website and has twice been a selected participant at the highly prestigious American Impressionist Society National Exhibition. She has been an artist for almost her entire life and a painter for over twenty years.

22

CAROLYN C. BELL TALAVERA SHADOWS

12” x 12” — Acrylic $1,200

My home patio is decorated with colorful Mexican Talavera pottery. My favorite flower is the geranium, and it has appeared in many of my paintings. The combination of the flowers, the colorful pot design, and the light casting the shadow on an adobe wall begged to be painted.

CAROLYN C. BELL • WAOW Associate • TX • www.carolyncbell.com Texas artist, Carolyn C. Bell, has been painting the colors, textures and architecture of the southwest and beyond since high school. NANETTE BIERS RUSSIAN RIVER REFLECTIONS

On September 8, 2022, I went out for a Paint ‘n Swim excursion at Johnson’s Beach in Guerneville along the Russian River in 107 degree heat. By the time I finished packing up my painting gear in the mid-afternoon, I was approaching heat exhaustion....which, ironically, made my plunge into the cool water afterwards nearly a moment of pure ecstasy. I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was one of the best swimming experiences of my life, partly fueled by having finished a painting of the waters I love!

12” x 9” — Oil $900

NANETTE BIERS • WAOW Associate • CA • www.nanettebiers.com After a successful 30-year career as a nationally-recognized commercial illustrator, in 2009 Nanette Biers shifted the focus of her career to creating fine art paintings, primarily landscapes depicting West Marin’s hills and ranches as well as other California locales. ASHWINI BHARATHULA CHUCK

I really enjoyed painting our beloved model, Chuck, at an open studio session at the Scottsdale Artists’ School back in January. He always had a smile on his face or a witty joke to lighten the hearts of whomever he came in contact with. I was very sad to learn that Chuck passed away recently, on May 6th. I feel fortunate to have captured him and his spirit months before his pass ing. Rest in peace, Chuck.

25

BETTY J. BILLUPS ZION AFTERNOON

12” x 16” — Oil $1,675

All of my landscapes have always been captured in plein air, that is, on the spot, not from photos or in the studio. I spent a nice length of time in Zion National Park, attempting to capture the grandeur and beauty of this magnificent landscape. Late afternoons are usually my favorite time to capture the “soul” of any place.

BETTY J. BILLUPS • WAOW Master Emeritus • ID • www.bettybillups.com Billups has been in the fine art field since 1975. She was V.P. for the Society of Illustrators of L..A. in ‘72 and published their annual Illustration West Catalogue. In 2000 she published a catalog for her one artist exhibit at the Clymer Museum. In 2005 her book, Artist’s Projects You Can Paint~10 Projects in Plein Air was published. She was commissioned by Toppenish, WA., for a major mural, and also commissioned by Mt. San Antonio College, in L..A. for a 16 foot mural. She has work in the U.S. Air Force art collection.

26

27

TINA BOHLMAN GONE UNDER COVER

12” x 16” — Watercolor $1,800

I wanted to capture the protective nature of a mother goose as she shields her babies from a spring snow shower. The goslings, portrayed as fluffy balls of downy feathers, huddle beneath their mother’s wings, finding warmth and safety.

TINA BOHLMAN • WAOW Signature • TX • www.tinabohlman.com Native Texan Tina Bohlman, painting professionally for 50 years, is often seen painting in the historic districts of her home town of Waxahachie, Texas. 28

YVONNE BONACCI BELGIAN BLONDE

11” x 14” — Oil $1,700

The inspiration for this piece was from photos I had taken at the Draft Horse Classic Show in Grass Valley, CA. I spotted this lovely Belgian just waiting to enter the arena. I couldn’t wait to paint this beautiful horse with such a kind eye. I love to capture the character of all the animals and people that I paint, and she definitely caught my eye.

YVONNE BONACCI • WAOW Signature • CA • www.yvonnebonacci.com Yvonne was born and raised on a cattle ranch, riding horses all her life and working cattle with her dad. “I love people and horses, it’s no wonder most of my paintings are of animals and people.” Yvonne has won numerous National and International Awards and has been inducted into the Elk Grove Hall of Fame and awarded the “Iris Award” for her success as artist and dedication to the arts in the community.

29

LIZ BONHAM HOLD THAT POSE

One recent fall morning, I painted en plein air at a Day of the Dead celebration where one of the dancing girls particularly caught my eye. I could not wait to get back to the studio to paint her in her flowing ruffled blue dress. Her pose captured a confident attitude that came from celebrating life and heritage.

20” x 16” — Oil $2,200

LIZ BONHAM • WAOW Signature • TX • www.lizbonham.com Liz was honored this year to be a finalist in the Art Renewal Center’s 16th International ARC Salon Competition at Sotheby’s NY. 30

DESTINY BOWMAN SKULL AND ORANGES

9“ x 12” — Oil $800

I loved balancing the delicate structure of the bird skull next to the vibrancy of the orange. One has turned into a beautiful sculpture and the other is ready to feed a life. The painting represents life and death, with the plump fruit and the fragile remnants of the skull.

DESTINY BOWMAN • WAOW Associate • CO • www.destinybowmanfineart.com I create as a therapy, a way to communicate when it is difficult to do with words. I paint the beauty with the macabre side by side. Having my own experience with mental illness, substance abuse and anxiety I know the struggle of pushing through the dark to get to the light. I capture those feelings and paint them as strengths, as dreams, as patience, as goddesses, and life and death.

PATRICIA RIDGE BRADLEY THE SOUND OF FLYING GROUSE, TAOS PUEBLO, IN ASPENS

I have several friends in Taos, New Mexico, and one of them is Lyle Wright. His Taos Pueblo name is The Sound of Flying Grouse, given to him by the elders of the tribe. I greatly ad mire and respect this man who has overcome many of life’s adversities. He is a talented and successful silversmith and tireless advocate for artists and craftspersons of Taos Pueblo. He opened Lyle’s Creations, a gallery in downtown Taos to showcase their artworks, as well as his own. He is teaching his children to follow in his footsteps as silversmiths. In addition to his talents, he also a model for many nationally-known artists, and I had the opportunity to photograph him in the Taos Ski Valley forest several years ago. In my painting, he is wearing ceremonial regalia and jewelry that he made himself. 32

LANI BROWNING DOGWOOD BLOSSOMS

12” x 16” — Oil $1,400

Dogwood trees are one of my favorite trees to have in a garden. When we moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland I planted four dogwood trees along the garden walkway...the white blossoms of the dogwoods are breathtaking beautiful when in bloom. How could I not paint them?

JEANNE CARDANA LE PETIT DUET

11.5” x 14.25” — Colored Pencil $1,950

Inspired by my granddaughter, Stella, who met her cousin, Cora, for the first time when they were two years old. They were visiting my mother at her retirement facility and found common ground at the baby grand piano. 35

MARY ANN CHERRY THE GOSSIPS

Our yard is full of birds and birdsong, and the redwing blackbirds are regular visitors. I also see these harbingers of spring at a popular wildlife refuge. I decided to paint them in their natural native habitat doing a bit of “story telling”

20” x 16” — Oil $2,800

36

SHERRY COBB-KELLEHER GIVE A BOY A ROPE

This painting is one that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I wanted to capture the look of deep thoughts in this boy’s face and have the viewer ask “What is he thinking?” There is a poem by Amy Potter called “Give A Boy A Rope” which tells a story of a boy growing up with a rope in his hand starting at a very young age until he’s an adult. These are lessons learned through learning how to rope, and be successful at it. Long hours of practice, many roads traveled and many “If I would have just done that,” that lead us through life. I grew up with a rope in one hand and a paint brush in the other, really the lessons are still just about the same!

11” x 14” — Oil $1,700

SHERRY COBB-KELLEHER • WAOW Associate • CO • sherryspaintedhorsestudio.com Growing up, some of Sherry’s earliest memories were watching her mother and grandmothers paint. They patiently taught her how to look at the world with an artist eye by tapping into her abiding love for animals and life well-spent working the land. Being born and raised on a ranch in Colorado gave Sherry the intimate knowledge of her subject. She continually seeks out the moments that “tell a story of the animals and people” that inspire her.

37

BETH COLE THE WEDDING TREE

20” x 20” — Oil $1,500 This willow tree takes in the refreshment of the water below. It reminds me of a wedding bouquet in all its fullness. It graces its surroundings, unaware of its beauty or significance.

38

JANE COLEMAN CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

16” x 21.5” — Watercolor $2,500 This is one of many beautiful old homesteads found in Wyoming where children had lots of room to play out-of-doors, take care of their animals, play in the dirt or grass with their favorite toys and use their imaginations. The inner peacefulness and quiet beauty of these old places is disappearing, but still appeals to me many, many years later.”

JANE COLEMAN • WAOW Signature • AZ • www.janecolemanart.com Jane Skaar Coleman paints the western landscape with its people, animals, wildlife, flora and old barns and ranches typical of the western lifestyle. AMANDA COWAN BACK TO THE BARN BEFORE SUNDOWN

16” x 20” — Oil $2,500

I took the photo for this piece after a long day of moving and working cows in the fall. The attitude shown fits my horse Speed perfectly. He was standing there, waiting to be unsaddled, and showing his displeasure at having to wait for me to finish what I was doing.

NANCY CROOKSTON NIGHTRIDER

I’ve been studying nocturnal painting lately and found it difficult yet fascinating. I have loved some of the old illustration artists understanding of doing a night scene and I really studied their ideas. After working on quite a few paintings it finally felt like it was looking like the night. Western has always been a draw for me and combining them seemed to really work. At the last minute I decided to make him a sheriff and to have the moonlight glisten off his badge.

LORI CUSICK TAOS OVERLOOK

12” x 24” — Oil $1,225 Taos Overlook was inspired by the vibrant colors and dramatic vistas of New Mexico’s high desert. The scene itself spoke to me, inviting me to immerse myself into its magical harmony of land, color and form. There’s a reason they call New Mexico the land of enchantment. It casts a spell. It’s impossible to look away.

JAN DeLIPSEY THE OLDEST TREE

10” x 20” — Oil $2,275

The tree in this painting lives in Grafton, Utah, just south of Zion National Park. I adore this tree and have stood under it many times painting. On my most recent visit though, I just wanted to celebrate this magnificent Cottonwood which is close to 300 years old. Indigenous people tell a story of a little star who hid in a Cottonwood tree so as to hear the sounds and songs of humans. I think about this story when I paint close to a Cottonwood and I always sing a bit so as not to disappoint the little star.

CRYSTAL DESPAIN REQUIEM

Though this pandemic era painting represents death, it was important to me to present it in the context of beauty and reverence. As I walked through fear and loss, threads of light and love remained. Even the raw edges of pain have something redemptive, human, and behovely in them.

ADDREN DOSS SON OF A GUN

18” x 18” — Oil $2,125

I met this handsome boy a number of years ago while painting on the farm where he lives. This farm is a protected conservancy property in central North Carolina and is home to a beautiful herd of Texas Longhorns and rodeo stock. This prize bull is the son of another famous rodeo bull named Machine Gun. I was attracted to him because of the way he was looking me right in the eye, and all his beautiful markings.

CHRISTINE GRAEFE DREWYER BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON

Once in a blue moon, or a silvery one, for that matter, a special relationship, that has no right to exist does… A few years back--four to be exact, I began to leave raw eggs out under a large sycamore tree in my backyard for a fox family that shared my domain. As the Queen of this particular realm, all of my subjects are adored and protected. I can’t rightly say how that blossomed into a full-fledged love affair where Pavy and I – short for Pavlova- referencing Pavlov’s salivating dogs, came to become family for each other. We meet every morning and evening where I often sing “You Are My Sunshine”, or “Buffalo Gals Won’t You Come Out Tonight!” This painting was the result of one frosty December morning when the moon had not quite set, and was shining through the woods behind her, I knew I had to paint it.

I love painting early morning scenes, & this one is a Hill Country scene with running water flowing through it. To me this is a beautiful, peaceful, tranquil scene, and I hope the viewer will enjoy it as well.

My artistic mission is to enlighten the viewer, to create a clear awareness of the inherent spirit of the animals I portray. I strive to use my talents and skills to capture their individual essence. BARRETT EDWARDS LAST RAYS

Some artists need frenzy or loud music to create. I have needed a peaceful, quiet mind. IT is likely that this is one of the things that attracted me to much to this scene, captured in the Georgia Low Country. The low sun, the water reflections, the silence of the marsh all told me I needed to paint this. Ehen the egret landed on the dead branch I took that as con firmation. This painting, I hope, speaks to all who seek a sense of calm in our hectic world.

20” x 16” — Oil $1,400

BARRETT EDWARDS • WAOW Associate • CA • www.barrettedwards.com A fourth generation artist, Barrett drew her first portrait at the age of 3. BARBARA SUMMERS EDWARDS SHADES OF LIGHT

As an artist I am intrigued by the qualities and shades of light figuratively and spiritually. I find working with a light source fascinating and challenging. This painting plays on that fascination with light but also as there must be opposition in all things, I used a warm blue-gray underpainting to counter the light.

AMY EVANS COMING HOME

16” x 20” — Oil $2,100

Coming Home was inspired by the first WAOW Gathering at the Wolf Creek Ranch in Oklahoma this past fall. I loved this scene as we entered through the gates and began to drive into the ranch. Roads can be mysterious as well as welcoming. To my surprise the owner took me back to this road as she showed us the ranch noting how special this drive was to her. I loved it also as it revealed the vastness and variety of this beautiful place.
