JULIE GOWING HAYES WAOW SIGNATURE, EMERITUS

JULIE GOWING HAYES has always loved spending time out in nature. Growing up on a farm in southwest Iowa helped develop her deep-rooted love for the outdoors. Her father’s involvement in local conservation efforts through tree planting, watershed developments and improved farming techniques along with her mother’s love of gardening and bird watching taught Hayes a respect for the land as well as the trees, flowers and wildlife it supports. A visit to the C.M. Russell studio and museum made a lasting impression on Julie as young budding artist. Hayes began drawing at an early age, moving into water color and acrylics and later oils. During her thirty-year apparel career she earned her Studio Art degree at Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC. Workshops have included Kathy Anderson, Albert Handell, Frank LaLumia, John P. Lasater IV and P.A. Nisbet. Now her medium of choice, Hayes’ oils are inspired by the light and color she sees in nature. Julie loves painting landscapes and florals from life, but birds are her favorite, painted from her hundreds of reference photos taken through countless hours of birdwatching. Through plein air painting Hayes has met some of her best friends and co-founded the first plein air group in North Carolina. When Julie is not able to paint outdoors she works in her studio in the beautiful Ozarks of NW Arkansas. Memberships include Artists of NW Arkansas, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, Plein Air Painters of the Ozarks.
